How to sell coats and jackets in the UK
Coats are one of the best-paying things in most wardrobes, and autumn into winter is when buyers are looking. Here's how to get yours listed while demand is high.
When to sell
Coat demand climbs from September, peaks as the weather turns, and carries on through January. List winter coats, puffers and wool coats in early autumn so they're up when people start searching. Lighter jackets, like denim, bombers and trench coats, sell best in spring.
Missed the season? A good coat still sells in January, though you may need to price a little sharper. See what sells when for the full calendar.
What holds its value
- Outdoor brands: The North Face, Patagonia, Arc'teryx, Barbour and similar are searched by name and hold value well, even worn.
- Down and wax: good down puffers and wax jackets sell steadily; a jacket that's been re-waxed is worth saying so.
- Wool and cashmere coats from known brands, especially in classic colours like camel, navy and black.
- Vintage: 80s and 90s outdoor wear and leather jackets do well on Depop and Vinted.
Premium brands are widely faked. Photograph the labels, tags and zips clearly: buyers look for them, and it protects you too.
Measurements buyers ask for
Coat sizes vary a lot between brands, so measurements answer the question before it's asked. Lay the coat flat, zipped or buttoned, and measure:
- Pit to pit: straight across, armpit to armpit.
- Length: from the top of the shoulder seam (or the collar) to the hem at the back.
- Sleeve: from the shoulder seam to the cuff.
Add them to the description in inches or centimetres, and say how it fits: "roomy, fits a UK 12 with a jumper underneath".
Photos
Hang the coat on a hanger against a plain door or wall in daylight, fastened, with the hood up if it has one. Then add: the back, the inside lining, the brand label and size label, the care label (for fill and fabric), the zips and pockets, and close-ups of any wear on the cuffs, collar or hem. More tips in photos that sell.
Pricing
Search the brand and style on Vinted or eBay and look at sold listings in similar condition. Things that move the price:
- Condition of the cuffs, collar and lining, and whether the zips all work.
- Fill and fabric: down vs synthetic, wool percentage, waxed cotton.
- Size: common sizes sell fastest; very large or small sizes can take longer.
- Timing: the same coat often sells for more in October than in March.
For a repeatable method, see how to price on Vinted, then use the profit calculator if you bought it to resell.
Posting a bulky coat
Coats are heavy and bulky, so weigh and measure the parcel before you choose the size option. Fold it neatly, put it in a plastic bag inside a mailing bag or box to keep it dry, and squeeze the air out of puffers. Down coats compress well and spring back once unpacked.
Snap the coat, get the listing
Photograph the coat and its labels, and Snappy writes the title, description and a suggested price for Vinted, eBay or Depop. Add your measurements and it is ready to post.
