How to sell your wedding dress in the UK
A wedding dress is often the most expensive thing in the wardrobe, worn once. Plenty of brides look for pre-loved dresses, so it can find a second wedding. Here's how to sell yours well.
When to sell
The sooner the better. Bridal styles change, and a dress from the last year or two is what most pre-loved buyers want. Brides usually shop many months before the wedding, so listing in winter and early spring catches people planning summer weddings.
The details buyers search for
- Designer and style name or number, usually on a label inside the dress or on your receipt. Buyers often search for a specific dress they've seen.
- Silhouette and neckline: A-line, fit and flare, ballgown, sheath; sweetheart, V-neck, off-shoulder.
- Fabric and colour: lace, crepe, tulle; ivory, white, champagne.
- Train length and whether it has a bustle.
Size, measurements and alterations
Bridal sizes are often smaller than high street sizes, so the label size alone can put buyers off. Give the label size, then measurements: bust, waist, hips and length from shoulder or top of bodice to hem. If the dress was altered, say how (taken in, hemmed for a certain heel height, straps added) and what could be let out again.
Cleaning and condition
A professionally cleaned dress sells faster. If it hasn't been cleaned, say so, and photograph the hem, which picks up the most marks. Be honest about any small marks, snags, missing beads or loose buttons. Store it in a breathable garment bag, not plastic, while it's for sale.
Photos
Include a photo from the day if you're happy to (crop or blur faces if you prefer): it shows how the dress moves and fits. Then hang it in good light against a plain background for the front, the back, the train spread out, close-ups of the fabric, lace, beading and buttons, and the designer label. See photos that sell.
Where to sell, and pricing
- Specialist pre-owned bridal sites reach buyers looking specifically for wedding dresses.
- Vinted and eBay reach a big audience; sellers pay no selling fee on Vinted.
- Local bridal resale groups and Facebook Marketplace let buyers try it on before buying.
Pre-loved dresses usually sell for a fraction of the original price, so check sold listings for the same designer. Recent styles, sought-after designers, good condition and common sizes hold value best. Including the veil or accessories can help it sell.
